THE PROCESS
Your Consultation
Your bespoke journey begins at Richard Bowman & Co, 350 George Street, where you will be personally welcomed and guided through every stage of the tailoring process. During your private consultation, we take the time to understand your lifestyle, requirements, and sartorial ambitions.
Together, we refine every element of your commission — from cloth and silhouette to structure, proportion, and finishing details — ensuring a garment that is both unmistakably personal and impeccably considered.
Taking Your Measurements
Once your cloth and styling details are confirmed, your cutter begins the process of translating your measurements into a unique paper pattern. More than twenty-eight precise measurements are taken alongside careful observations of posture, stance, and movement.
Every nuance of the body is studied with exacting attention, allowing the garment to achieve exceptional balance, comfort, and elegance. Considerations as subtle as how you stand, sit, and move become integral to the bespoke process.
Drafting Your Pattern
Following your consultation, your cutter drafts a paper pattern entirely by hand — an exclusive blueprint created solely for you. This pattern forms the foundation of your garment and is preserved within our archives, evolving and refined over time with each future commission.
Far beyond a simple template, your pattern becomes a permanent expression of individuality and craftsmanship, ensuring a fit of enduring precision and sophistication.
Striking & Cutting
Once your pattern is complete, your chosen cloth is carefully laid out and “struck.” The paper pattern is positioned directly onto the fabric before each section is marked by hand with chalk and cut using traditional shears — a ritual of craftsmanship unchanged for generations.
At this stage, precision is paramount. Checks, stripes, and motifs are aligned seamlessly throughout the garment, while each cut is guided not only by measurement, but by the cutter’s instinctive rock of eye — an intuitive understanding of proportion, balance, and form acquired through years of mastery.
It is here that engineering, artistry, and intuition converge, marking the true beginning of your bespoke garment.
Your Baste Fitting
Your first fitting, known as the “baste fitting,” is where the garment is assembled in its rawest form. Once cut, the cloth is loosely constructed by hand, allowing your cutter to assess the garment directly on your body for the first time.
Though unfinished, this stage is among the most important within the bespoke process. Your cutter carefully evaluates balance, drape, silhouette, and proportion, making chalk markings and detailed refinements that guide the garment toward its final form.
From this moment onward, the unmistakable Richard Bowman & Co silhouette begins to emerge — elegant, refined, and timeless.
Your Second Fitting
Following the baste fitting, the garment is entirely dismantled and remade to incorporate every refinement from the first fitting.
At your second fitting, the garment appears significantly more complete, with the structure, shoulder line, drape, lapels, pockets, and sleeves taking shape. Each fitting moves the garment closer towards perfection, with as many as three fittings sometimes required to achieve the exact line, comfort, and sophistication for which Richard Bowman & Co is renowned.
Hand Finishing
Once approved, your garment is entrusted to our finishers, whose expertise brings every final detail to life by hand. From carefully shaping and pressing the canvassing to hand-padded lapels and meticulously sewn buttonholes, no shortcut is ever taken.
Over eighty hours of craftsmanship, as many as six thousand individual hand stitches, and the expertise of up to fifteen artisans contribute to the creation of every Richard Bowman & Co garment. Each stitch reflects generations of tailoring knowledge and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence.
Your Finished Garment
At your final fitting, you will experience the completed garment in its finished form — a piece created entirely for you, representing months of collaboration, precision, and craftsmanship.
Your cutter ensures every detail is exact before the garment is carefully pressed and prepared to leave our workrooms. Your personal paper pattern is then preserved within our archives, allowing future commissions to be crafted with ease and evolving precision over time.
An unequalled expression of craftsmanship, made entirely by hand.
